WEDDING PORTRAITS WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL IN WASHINGTON, DC
Welcome to Washington National Cathedral where Abby and Taylor had the most amazing portrait session inside and outside the Cathedral. Romance and timelessness were the whole feel of this couples session. The English Gothic features of the cathedral are an amazing display of architecture, with the vaulted ceiling over ten-stories high. Truly perfect for Abby and Taylor’s portrait shots. The Cathedral features many sculptures, ornate wood carvings and stained-glass windows. Although we didn’t get a chance to venture there, the beautiful Bishop’s Garden is also located on the grounds just next to the Cathedral.
Abby and Taylor wanted me to capture some timeless and romantic portraits of them in this very unique couples session. Abby is a photographer herself, so it was a great honour for me to be their photographer. The pressure was on! Firstly, we started on the stone steps of a nave in front of a glorious three-pointed archway. Abby wore a birdcage veil, encrusted with pearls and her beautiful blonde hair tumbled down to her waist. She had on a satin white three-quarter length dress and romantic tulle gloves. Abby accessorised with pearl studded earrings and white boots. Taylor wore a vintage style wool suit that matched the cathedral’s overall feel so perfectly (check out this vintage-styled cathedral wedding!). As they wandered along the stone path in a hidden garden, I captured a stolen kiss.
Once inside the magnificent Cathedral we found so many unique and perfect nooks for our portrait session. Whether it was in front of a round archway or the many three-pointed archways found in the Cathedral. Each photo told a story of its own. The balcony portraits had a real Romeo and Juliet feel to them as Abby and Taylor leaned over the side for a sweet kiss.
Once we had explored the amazing inside of the Cathedral and captured classic portrait shots of the couple, we ventured outside. At the front of the cathedral, I took some beautiful photos of Abby and Taylor with the whole Cathedral in the background. The 232 foot high towers made them look like tiny specks on the entrance steps. We finished off the couples session on the stone steps with Abby and Taylor showing off just how beautiful this cathedral was for portrait photos. Whether you desire a couples session or wedding portraits the Washington National Cathedral has it all.

Washington National Chapel’s first foundation stone was laid in 1907. The latest part of the building was constructed between 1970 and 1990. The Cathedral is built from 150,000 tons of weight-bearing Indiana limestone. There is no structural steel included in the cathedral’s design as it is an entirely masonry building with a brick core.
There are more than 231 stained glass windows in the Cathedral. The themes of these windows range from the bible and religious history, our nation’s history, geography, and the history of the cathedral itself. The most notable would be the Creation rose window. The west façade has two towers that are 232 feet high. Named after the Cathedral patron saints, one towers is St Peter and the other tower is St Paul. Washington National Cathedral also has three large, architecturally varied chapels on its crypt level. It is the second largest cathedral in the United States and the sixth largest in the world.
